Atlanta is a very strange city, it doesn't really have a main street, the downtown is basically few buildings and few touristic attractions.
Anyway I am here for Dr. King, from the hotel/Downtown it is only 10 minutes by car to the site, there is no traffic (and this is another weird thing) and parking is right there.
First thing you want to do when you get there is to register for the tour to visit the house where ML (that is how they used to call him when he was little) was born.
We have arrived at the visitor center at 10.30 and yet we have been registered for the 4 pm tour! I really think we were lucky to get in, so try to be there at 9 am (which is the opening time).
Here few picture of the visitor center, the main entrance, the back with the statue of Gandhi (who inspired MLK Jr), the original carriage that was used to bring Dr. King coffin and a reproduction of the March on Washington
The center is really well structured, lots of information in a interactive way, it is a very moving experience, especially when I was listening and watching parents explaining to their children how horrible it was before Dr King and the Civil Rights
Here above there is (the second picture) the original leaflet distributed for the March on Washington and in the third picture there is Rosa Parks, the mother of the freedom movement.
And here you have the Church where Dr. King used to preach and his father and grandfather before him
The Church is right in front of the Visitor Center, and it is on the same side of the grave
In these pictures below there are the wallet Dr. King was wearing the day he died and the suitcase he carried with him in Memphis
And finally the house where he was born, unfortunately photos were not allowed
In reality, since the tour of the house was scheduled for 4 pm, we have left the site at 1.30 pm to go to the CCN and come back again here.
So here you have few pictures from the CCN tour (also on FB), it last around 55 minutes, but I wasn't very happy with the tour guide, anyway... the tour was worth it
Before dinner let's have a look at the Centennial Olympic Park
Ok dinner time! At Pittypat's Porch! What are we having: Southern Salmon Filet, served on a bed of jambalaya rice with fried green tomatoes and onion rings, and Blackeyed Pea Cake with Pecan Coated Catfish Fingers. Desserts: Pittypat's Pie, Classic Pecan Pie and Georgia Peach Cobbler!
Everything was very good, but the best part has been meeting the Manager Scott! A guy from Brooklyn that told us all about Atlanta and American economy, very sad stories... Thanks Scott, gives us a comment if you will ever read!
